After rebounding from a pair of losses to start the season, the Warrenton baseball team got back to .500 with wins over Duchesne and Ritenour late last month.
The team has been off since March 22 thanks to poor weather, but Head Coach Eric Burle likes what he has seen so far.
The Warriors have been led offensively by seniors Alex and Chris Vogt, who have combined for six RBIs in four games.
Chris Vogt leads the team with two home runs, and Alex has a team-high .583 batting average.
“Both Vogts have been great,” Burle said. “Both are very positive in both practices and games. Alex is one of the better, if not best, designated hitters in our conference. If he continues to drive the ball and get on base, good things are going to happen. Chris has always had great extra base power, he just needs to put it all together and do it at a more consistent level.”
Chris Vogt also leads the team on the mound with a 1.05 earned-run average in 6 2/3 innings of work.
“He also has great stuff on the mound,” Burle said. “He has good velocity and a sharp breaking pitch. When he is pounding the strike zone good things are going to happen. Overall, most of our seniors have been great leaders and doing the right things, which is great for our younger players.”
That includes senior pitcher Eli Ecton, who leads the team with eight innings pitched with a 1-1 record. He has a 2.63 ERA and a team-high 11 strikeouts.
On March 22, the Warriors beat Ritenour without junior Garrison Hibbs, who hit .407 last spring with 13 RBIs.
Hibbs pulled his hamstring in the win over Duchesne the day before.
“We’re not really sure to what extent he pulled it, but we will know more once he gets back to going 100 percent,” Burle said. “We were fortunate to pick up a couple wins without one of our best bats in the lineup. “
Underclassmen also have helped Warrenton early on.
“We have had some younger guys that have helped fill in and made some immediate impacts in their first varsity season,” Burle said. “Nate Shepard has had some great at-bats early on and some key hits. Hunter Sherman has made some big plays at third base early on in the season, too.”
Weather permitting, the Warriors will host Fort Zumwalt East and Wright City Saturday at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., respectively.
