Warrenton Baseball Improves to 3-0 in GAC

The Warrenton baseball team finds itself a similar situation from last year — off to a 3-0 start in GAC play and needing to sustain momentum but not become overconfident. The Warriors remained perfect in league play on Tuesday, dispatching Winfield 11-5 after holding off a rally by their visitors.“It took two come-from-behind victories to start off 2-0, but this one was a little different,” said Burle. “We started off strong, and they came back. We showed a little resolve in facing adversity and were able to put up a couple big innings toward the middle of the game.”Unlike during the first two conference games where Warrenton had to battle back late against Orchard Farm, the Warriors got out to an early edge this time. They took a 3-0 advantage early with Hunter Russell leading off with a single and Hunter Capstick connecting on a double. Consecutive doubles from Dallas Johnson and Ben Stephens began driving in the runs, including a two-RBI shot from Johnson.“Dallas is hitting the ball pretty well,” said Coach Eric Burle. “He put up a few that would have been out of the park in some places.”Johnson drove the ball to the outfield each time, dropping just shy of the fence.A few fielding woes by the Warriors aided Winfield in getting on base in the early innings, but starting pitcher Brandon Moeller was able to restore order.“I think we cleaned it up throughout the latter half of the game,” said Burle. “We started strong defensively and just had a few plays here and there that made it through that those guys would have typically made.”Winfield’s runs were sporadic but resilient. It scored once in the second and twice in both the fourth and sixth innings.“They were pretty aggressive on the base paths and took advantage of that to get in scoring position,” said Burle. “They executed pretty well.”Moeller’s command kept them at bay, though, as he struck out eight batters and walked just one. He allowed four hits.“Brandon gave us a chance to win,” said Burle. “He could have hung his head when they tied it up, but he kind of stemmed the tide a little bit and gave our bats a chance to regain the lead.”Thorough run support in the fifth helped as well, with the Warriors punching through seven runs to pull away.“We were hitting the ball on the nose,” said Burle. “There were a few more fly balls than I’d like, but we struck the ball pretty good and were aggressive on the base paths.”Moeller didn’t have his best day at the plate, but Burle says his teammates rallied around him.“The good thing was that Brandon is typically our best hitter, but even with him just getting one hit today, we still managed 11 runs,” said Burle. “That says a lot about the other guys in the lineup.”Capstick ended up 3-for-4 for the Warriors.“It’s good that some of those younger guys are swinging the bat too,” said Burle.CAPSTICK STRONG AT PLATEDerrick Forsythe Photo.
