Those in need of new mattresses will not only be able to upgrade their bedding but also support local youth while doing so this weekend.The Warrenton High School band will host a mattress fundraiser on Saturday, Feb. 24 at the Daniel Boone Elementary gymnasium.“The company does some really awesome things for sports programs,” said Band Director Tom Speers. “They sell the mattresses for about what you would pay for them at a normal store, and we get a huge chunk of that profit, which is pretty awesome.”Speers said the band holds fundraisers each year for a variety of reasons. Last year the group took a trip to perform at Disney in Orlando, Fla.“A lot of the funds we raised helped go toward those kids who wouldn’t have been able to go if they had to pay for it themselves,” said Speers.With the band continually growing in numbers, at around 120 students, and the scale of its performances, costs have also risen. In each of the past few seasons the halftime performances at football games have become more elaborate, and the band has also increased its presence at home basketball contests.“This year the funds are going toward helping get caught up on buying some equipment and new gear for next year’s marching band,” said Speers. “We spent quite a bit of money on marching band this year.”Speers said the plan is to order new uniforms for the marching band next year, and the anticipated cost is around $80,000.“The community has been really supportive, and we’re very thankful for that,” he said.Those interested in purchasing mattresses or supporting the band can contact Speers at 636-699-9682.
