Athletes and spectators at Warren County R-III athletic events will enjoy several upgrades this school year, as new projects are unveiled throughout the fall.
Those attending the varsity football debut this Friday against Liberty will get a first look at the new state-of-the-art digital scoreboard installed two weeks ago.
“It will allow for us to play videos and commercials,” said Activities Director Bobby Spoonster. “It’s something the school and community can take pride in, being the first in the area.”
The scoreboard, which cost $59,500, was completely funded by sponsorships and donations. It has all the features that a video board at a major college or university would have.
Spoonster says the plan is to engage student involvement by having the audio visual classes work on commercials and video feed. Ultimately, the marketing classes may also get involved. He says there will be commercials showing during Friday’s contest.
“We’re very thankful for those businesses that stepped up to support our students and make this possible, along with the Big Red Boosters,” said Spoonster.
While it may take some time to explore, Spoonster says the intention is to also feed live video and instant replay as the operators become more familiar with the technology.
In addition to the scoreboard, work on the multipurpose gymnasium is also moving along swiftly to its late October or early November completion date. This should allow for use by the winter sports teams, as the facility has a wrestling practice room and basketball court. It will also provide expanded concession space accessible from both inside and outside.
“What’s great is that wrestling won’t have to go off campus to practice, and we’ll have a lot more flexibility with boys and girls basketball teams,” said Spoonster. “We’ll also have the baseball and softball nets where they can have practice facilities inside when the weather is bad.”
Another breakthrough for the athletic department is the addition of lights to the baseball and softball field, which will allow for doubleheaders and games to be played into the evening.
“It allows us to be able to host more playoff opportunities,” said Spoonster. “We’ve been able to host indoor sports for playoffs, but not having lights has really limited us for softball and baseball. Now we’ll be able to host district tournaments and beyond, which brings more exposure and revenue to the district.”
