Where: St. Charles West High School. When: Friday, Sept. 18Time: 7 p.m.Coaches: St. Charles West — Gary Strauss. Warrenton — Steve McDowell.Records: St. Charles West — 2-2. Warrenton — 3-1.Last Year’s Meeting: St. Charles West 49, Warrenton 7.After starting the 2014 season 4-0, the Warriors suffered their first loss at the hands of West. Running back Drew Lauer proved to be an unstoppable force, rushing for 176 yards and four touchdowns on a modest 14 carries.Warrenton’s defense held early and turned out to be the Warriors’ only source of points, as Zach Logan returned an interception 56 yards for a touchdown.Notched in a 7-7 contest, Lauer visited the end zone three more times during the second quarter. And he wasn’t alone in his attack, as St. Charles West used seven different backs to amass 389 rushing yards.Meanwhile, the Warriors managed just 13 rushing yards on 21 carries.Warrenton split quarterback duties between Ryan Bradshaw, who was nine of 11 for 71 yards, and Braydan Chmiel, who was two of four for 18 yards.Outlook: St. Charles West began its season 0-2, falling to two of the stronger teams on its schedule in Zumwalt North and Cape Central. The previous two meetings have gone in West’s favor, including a one-point win over St. Charles in Week Three.McDowell expects his Warrenton team to match up better than it did last year. While St. Charles West’s personnel has changed, its approach has not. He anticipates a solid running attack, with a diligent effort up the middle. McDowell says the quarterback is a threat out of the option and is relying on his team to be sound defensively, as it was in Week Four. Thus far, St. Charles West has employed a double tight formation with a flanker bank, occasionally switching to a trips formation.Defensively, St. Charles West will likely operate out of a 4-4 front or switch to a 4-3 if the opposition presents a spread.Warrenton has found its offense through balance, throwing for 950 yards while rushing for 680 this season. Chmiel has completed 46 of 72 passes for 597 yards, throwing eight touchdowns to four interceptions. Hunter Russell has been the top receiver, with 20 catches for 410 yards, while Cameron Richardson leads the way on the ground with 317 yards on 54 carries.Defensively, the Warriors have relied heavily on senior safety Jacob Abel, who leads the way with 46 tackles. The Bottom Line: The Warriors are coming off an emotional high after beating St. Charles in overtime during Week Four, so they will have to avoid the letdown by switching their focus entirely to West. Warrenton showed exceptional resilience in its last contest, battling back after a disappointing first half on offense. But the defense has been able to buy time for the Warriors’ offense, which McDowell is happy with in terms of production.—By Derrick Forsythe, Record Staff WriterWarrenton Warriors
