The city of Warrenton is aiming to finish a sidewalk along South Highway 47, but must first get permission from property owners to build it.When finished, the sidewalk will connect the central area of Warrenton to Warrior Avenue in the south. The existing sidewalk is mostly complete, but some gaps remain.“We have one remaining property we weren’t able to get the easement for,” said City Administrator Terri Thorn. That property is south of the old Warrenton fire station, she said, adding that all remaining easements have been obtained to complete the sidewalk in the area. The Warrenton Board of Aldermen voted 6-0 July 17 to begin negotiating to purchase the easement from the property owner. If they cannot reach an agreement, the city will begin condemnation proceedings.State law allows cities to condemn private property in order to use it for making public improvements. This negotiation for the easement on South Highway 47 is separate from an initiative to extend the city’s sidewalks along North Highway 47. That project is in early planning stages, and will require getting a whole new group of easements. Early estimates put the cost of the north side project at $1.7 million.Sidewalk
