Warrenton agrees to pay for traffic study

The city of Warrenton has agreed to pay more than $31,000 for an analysis of local traffic patterns prior to extending Warrior Avenue west from its intersection at Highway 47.

The road extension will provide access to a new public pool facility being built west of the intersection.

The Missouri Department of Transportation, which owns Highway 47, is requiring the traffic study, Warrenton Director of Operations Terri Thorn told the city’s board of aldermen during a public meeting Sept. 5.

The study is so MoDOT can determine what modifications will need to be made to the traffic lights at Highway 47 and Warrior Avenue, Thorn said.

Ward 2 Alderman Gary Auch asked what would happen if the city doesn’t do the study. Thorn replied that a permit from MoDOT is required to extend Warrior Avenue, and the traffic study is a condition of the permit.

“Unfunded mandates, they call it,” commented Ward 1 Alderman Greg Costello.

The board voted 5-0, with Ward 3 Alderman John Miller absent, to approve a $31,675 agreement with engineering firm Crawford, Murphy and Tilly to conduct the study. That’s the same engineering firm contracted for work on a new Interstate 70 interchange that will be built on the west side of Warrenton.
