Record Staff WriterWarrenton city officials are in the process of implementing several tasks outlined in its strategic plan. The eight-page document outlines priorities over a one- and five-year period, as well as a mission and a vision. All six aldermen voted in favor of adopting the revised plan earlier this month. The strategic plan was first adopted by the board a year ago.A few of the tasks have either been started or are underway, according to city officials.Earlier this year, the city published a citywide newsletter and has hired a firm to redesign its website. The city also is working to upgrade and improve the wastewater treatment system and ensure sidewalks and other pedestrian-safety concerns are addressed in expansion projects. In addition, a project to update the city’s comprehensive master plan has begun“This is something we use as a working tool and not just as a document to say we have it,” Alderman Gary Auch said.Goals contained in the plan focus on improving communication with citizens; cooperating with county, school district and neighboring cities; marketing and promoting Warrenton to businesses and residents; maintaining clean neighborhoods; expanding travel and growth options; establishing viable revenue sources; ensuring quality medical care; providing retirement opportunities; enjoying the fabulous city; and ensuring the city is a great place to work.Other highlights from the one-year action plan are:• Hosting an informal meeting inviting county commissioners, school board members and elected officials from neighboring cities to improve communications;• Establishing community/neighborhood improvement programs and contests;• Exploring annexation opportunities, including the possibility of bringing Pinckney Street property into city boundary;• Partnering with area businesses and organizations to support at lease one annual senior-focused event;• Evaluating need of hiring parks and recreation coordinator to manage outside contracted sports leagues, pool and other contracts; and• Determining feasibility of implementing LAGERS retirement plan for employees.Auch encouraged residents to read and learn more about the strategic plan.“So often in an organization, you do five-year plans, three-year plans and they sit by the wayside and you dust them off,” he remarked. “But that is not what we have done with the city. If the public takes some time to look at this, I think they will get an idea of where we are trying to go as a city. These are real steps and real goals that we have in the plan that will make significant improvements to the city.”City of Warrenton
