By his own admission, Mason Sanders didn’t have the best day on Friday.
If only most athletes could have the sort of bad day Sanders had. The Warrenton freshman high jumper won the title at the St. Dominic Invitational.
His height of six feet, two inches edged Elsberry’s Noah Hausgen, who cleared a height of 6-0.
“It felt good to win at St. Dominic,” Sanders said. “I knew going in, there was going to be some good competition. I feel like I performed (poorly).”
Sanders was one of four winners for the Warrenton boys at the meet.
Another victor was junior Marcus Greene. He won the shot put with a distance of 49-11, which outdistanced Bowling Green’s Jakarri Clark (47-9.25).
Like Sanders, Greene said that while he is further along in his personal process, there is still room for improvement.
“I threw okay, but it wasn’t my best day,” Greene said. “We’re working on small things to improve my spin in the shot and I think I will do great things this season.”
Like Markus, Markel Greene also brought home a championship from the meet.
The junior’s distance of 148-11 won the discus as he bettered Clark (147-3).
After Sanders and the Greenes, Warrenton also took the top spot in the 4x400. The team of freshman Dominic Laney, junior Jordan Lopez, freshman Antevion Pierce and sophomore Antwian Pierce finished in 3 minutes, 39.74 seconds. It was a second and one-half faster than the performance turned in by Orchard Farm.
Other top-four finishes for Warrenton included: Antevion Pierce (23.8), who took fourth in the 200; the team of sophomore Eli Schneider, sophomore Bradley Tucker, Laney and freshman Ty Thompson (46.34) taking third in the 4x100; and senior Jonathan Sweitzer, Thompson, Antevion Pierce and Antwian Pierce (1:34.15) earning second in the 4x200.
The performances helped the Warrenton boys amass 87 points to finish third at the meet. The Wright City boys finished seventh at the meet with 57 points.
Senior Kaden Cross took second in the 100 (11.21) and the 200 (23.34); sophomore Kaveon Schulte was third in the 110 hurdles (16.33) and fourth in the 300 hurdles (44.09); the team of senior Dayton Humphreys, Stephan Hamel, Janyxan Tiscareno Sandoval and Cross was third in the 4x100 (45.76); the team of Terrence Love, Joshua Harris, Tiscareno Sandoval and Andrew Staats was third in the 4x400 (3:42.76) and senior Quinn Schnarre (130-9) was fourth in the discus.
The Warrenton girls finished 10th, scoring 27 points. Senior Makayla Witthaus (35-2) won the shot put.
The other top-four finisher was freshman Claire Goldsmith (13.53), who placed fourth in the 100.
Wright City took home a trio of girls' titles, much to the delight of Coach Fred Ross. Senior Sadie Sehnert (111-6) won the javelin; freshman Mikaya Harris (15-4) won the long jump and freshman Victoria Riggs (5:45.37) won the 1600.
“We had a great meet, earning 12 PR's,” Ross said. “The girls did especially well with Sadie in the shot and throwing her PR in winning the javelin. We have been working on her follow-through, and it paid off. Victoria Riggs has set PR's the last two weeks and it continued with her 4th place in the 800 and her championship time in the mile. Victoria just continues to work hard in practice and has a self-driven passion to get better. Mikaya jumped her PR in winning the long jump.”
Other top-four finishers for Wright City were: Riggs, fourth in the 800 (2:37.01); Sehnert (28-9.25) fourth in the shot put; sophomore Joshlyn Hawn third in the discus (88-3) and senior Jolee Lockhart (14-7) fourth in the long jump.
