Warren County Record wins four awards in state contest

Posted

The Warren County Record was honored with four awards, including being recognized in the General Excellence category, in the Better Newspaper Contest sponsored by the Missouri Press Association and Missouri Press Foundation.

The awards were presented during a luncheon held Saturday, Sept. 13, at the Wildwood Hotel in Wildwood.

The Record received a second-place award for “General Excellence.” The contest judge’s comments were “sophistication in animal shelter vote story and in fire district needs enterprise story. A colorful, clean and informative read. Truly striking design on Sabrina Carpenter songwriter centerpiece.”

Publisher Tim Schmidt received a first-place award for “Best Front Page Design.”

“Clean design with smart, eye-catching centerpieces with helpful at-a-glance information included with one,” the judge wrote. “Loved the use of QR code to get readers to your online content.”

Former Staff Writer Jack Underwood received two awards for stories he wrote in 2024. He received a second-place certificate in the “Best News Story” category about the July 2024 flooding event in Treloar.

Underwood’s story, “Options proposed on how to fix Indian Head Lode Road,” took third place for “Best Story About Government.”

The Record competed against other newspapers across the state with a similar circulation size for work published in 2024.

Schmidt will continue serving on the Missouri Press Board of Directors. He is currently in his fourth year on the board and was re-elected to a three-year term beginning January 2026.

Schmidt founded Westplex Media Group, which owns three other community newspapers in Montgomery City, Mexico and O’Fallon. He has owned The Record since 2019.

Bryan Chester, general manager of the Columbia Missourian, was elected president of the 2026 board. He will officially take office as MPA president Jan. 1.
