The Warren County R-III calendar will change for the 2027-28 school year.
Thanks to a school board vote at its October meeting, next school year's commencement ceremony will be one week earlier, on June 3.
The change moves the ceremony to the day after the school year is scheduled to end on June 2, 2028.
Superintendent Dr. Gregg Klinginsmith said the change will avoid a long wait for the ceremony after the school year ends.
“It’s really the only significant change to the calendar,” Klinginsmith said. “The high school feels like they can have graduation on the Saturday after the last day of school. I’m thrilled with that news, honestly, and personally. I just think that there’s that long gap and it’s kind of odd.”
Board member Franci Schwartz asked Klinginsmith about another item included on the graduation date. The item was the backup time for graduation, in case weather was a factor.
“I noticed that it said something (about) if we had to have graduation at a time other than 7 p.m.,” Schwartz said.
“Yep, that’d be a 10 a.m. back-up time,” Klinginsmith said. “We talked to the high school people that run it. Kids would have to get here at eight to get in order (to be ready by) 10. They want to have it at night, so 7 p.m. is the primary time.”
“But we don’t have control of the weather,” Schwartz added.
The approved calendar also included an inclement weather schedule in which snow makeup days will be made up on the next available Monday.
However, the district will make up the first five snow days using the AMI (Alternative Methods of Instruction) plans.
The calendar includes 160 Teacher Days and 147 student days. That time equals 62,755 minutes, or 1,045.92 hours.
New teacher days will be Aug. 10-12, 2027, and middle and high school parent-teacher conferences will take place on Oct. 4 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
