With the weather being ultimately unpredictable, the Warren County R-III School Board recently took steps to protect its investments.
At the August board meeting, the board voted on two issues that weather could affect across the district’s properties.
First, the board discussed a three-year contract with Automatic Controls Equipment Systems to monitor the HVAC system at New Daniel Boone Elementary.
The first year of the contract will cost $12,517. The contract includes a slight fee increase each year.
“This is a new company for us,” Superintendent Dr. Gregg Klinginsmith said. “We feel like it’s going to be a better deal than what we have with our other companies. One big change is that they’re going to allow us to work on the system ourselves. We have some HVAC certified guys who can just go up and take care of things right away.”
Klinginsmith said that, with other companies the district has used, someone would have to call the company to send someone out to a district building.
“It just takes so much time,” he said. “This will make things faster and a little cheaper. We’re recommending that we try this with the new school.”
The board passed the measure unanimously.
The second measure considered was a roofing services contract for the middle school, the high school and the administration building.
The proposed contract cost $325,430.
“This would come out of Fund 4 for the budget this year,” Klinginsmith said. “We do need to do some roofing work. Encor was our low bid on that. This would be at the high school, the middle school and at this building, as well.”
Klinginsmith said that with things being shifted around in the district due to new construction, work on the administration building is as essential as keeping the school buildings in top shape.
“One of the reasons for this building is that we try to push anything off happening at central office,” Klinginsmith said. “But with technology moving over here, we just don’t want to have any leaks on our server.”
Board member Stephanie Tibbetts asked Klinginsmith about the contract's potential financial ramifications.
“This comes out of capital funds?” Tibbetts asked. “And what’s the balance?”
“Yes, it’s out of Fund 4,” Klinginsmith answered. “It’s $1.4 (million) now but will build back up as the year goes on.”
The measure passed also unanimously.
