Warren County BackStoppers returns for 14th year

Posted

Warren County BackStoppers returns later this month for its 14th annual dinner and auction, which will take place Saturday, Feb. 21 at the St. Ignatius Community Center in Concord Hill.

The local BackStoppers program is part of a larger organization that includes affiliates in several counties throughout Missouri and Illinois. The mission of the organization is to provide assistance to families of first responders who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

As typically happens every year tickets for this year’s dinner and auction have sold out, according to Backstoppers Treasurer Michelle Heiliger and Sheriff Kevin Harrison. Both said there is a waitlist that is maintained and if seats become open, those on the waitlist may still have the opportunity to purchase tickets. Harrison said each year the organization sells 400 tickets for the event.

“Every year we have a sell out,” Harrison said. “I think even if we had a larger venue we would sell out, that is how popular the event is every single year.”

Heiliger said the organization is still seeking items to be donated for the oral and silent auctions. She said that this year BackStoppers has created a brochure to help facilitate identification of the items donated for the event.

Heiliger said that over the years a wide variety of items have been donated to the organization including hand-made quilts, furniture, designer bags, even a whole hog. One of the items donated this year included floor seats to see AC/DC in concert, she said.

Last year the organization received $120,000 in donations and passed $1 million in total donations over the years the group has been in existence in Warren County. Estimates are that the event this year could raise close to $150,000.

Heiliger said that those interested in providing auction items or other donations can contact her, Harrison or Warren County Emergency Communications Administrator Amy Leach. Heiliger said that donors can also call any of the local police departments in Warren County as they all have a liaison tied to the organization and can help those interested in donating to the cause.
