At the Turning Point Domestic and Sexual Violence Shelter and Supportive Services annual retreat Aug. 15, outgoing board member Donna Wargin received the 2017 Board Service Award.Wargin, of Warrenton, served on the board for six years. Her financial expertise brought enhanced professional oversight to the organization’s accounting and budget policies throughout her tenure. In addition to holding offices and chairing and serving on numerous committees, in 2017 she organized 32 co-workers at AFB International to host a successful fundraising fashion show at Quail Ridge Lodge in Wentzville.During the retreat, Carrie Gates installed the board officers for fiscal year 2018. They are Chair Laura Adams, Vice Chair Tim Churchill, Secretary Debbie Hinrichs and Treasurer Heather Haas. The retreat also included a facilitated values-vision-mission exercise led by performance coach Karen Alquist.Turning Point’s mission has evolved to keep pace with the increasingly complex issues victims in crisis present, including physical, mental and dental health problems; substance abuse/addiction; and homelessness. The organization seeks to stabilize victims, along with minor-age family members, and sometimes pets, to reduce their level of vulnerability by offering a continuum of supportive services.Turning Point’s 4 1/2 county service area of Franklin, Gasconade, Montgomery, Warren and western St. Charles recently expanded to include Lincoln County when that county’s emergency shelter closed. In fiscal year 2017, Turning Point served 194 adults and 56 children, in person. In that same period, 94 adults and 69 children were turned away for lack of space or because programming did not meet their needs.Besides residential services, nonresidential clients are helped through court advocacy, safety planning, economic empowerment and resource education.Turning Point is a nonprofit, United Way of Greater St. Louis agency operating in Warren County. Seventeen percent of the half million dollar operating budget is raised through direct donations eligible for 50 percent Missouri Domestic Violence Shelter Tax Credits. For more information, contact Executive Director Ellen Reed at 636-456-1186 or visit turningpointdvs.com.Turning Point
