While the team might have had the top scorer in the entire area, the Warrenton boys soccer season was far from a one-man show.
For their efforts, the Warriors (14-9) had four players make the GAC North all-conference soccer teams, which was a testament to the team-first approach, coach John Schulte said.
“The team worked extremely hard and had a great season,” Schulte said. “We had a lot of success because the team played unselfishly and believed in the system that was practiced. All the hard work in the off-season helped build skill and teamwork.”
Leading the way for Warrenton, and for the entire area in scoring, was senior forward Isaac Wagner.
His 45 goals and 106 total points were the best for any player in the metropolitan area. He added 16 assists to achieve his overall point total.
“He understands the game, plays hard and does not give up,” said Schulte of Wagner. He has a great ability to go to goal.”
That ability also produced a team-high seven game-winning goals this season.
Alongside Wagner on the conference’s top team was junior midfielder Gavin Thompson.
Thompson contributed five goals and 10 assists. Schulte said that the 10 assists from his junior played a big role in the team’s success.
“He has great skill with the ball,” Schulte said. “His ability to find forwards (was important).”
A pair of Warriors made the all-conference second team this season for their work.
Senior midfielder Nolan Donovan and senior defender Caleb Hackmann earned those spots. Donovan scored three times and added six assists while Hackmann helped anchor a team defense that allowed just 2.4 goals per game throughout the season and 2.2 goals during league games.
“Nolan controls the midfield, distributing the ball to the offense,” Schulte said. “Caleb is a very hard worker who can read the play and break it up.”
