Volunteers organize peanut butter and jelly drive

Local volunteers answered the call to provide food for kids who are going hungry this summer by launching a peanut butter and jelly drive. Warren County residents Chloe Sutton, 16, and Beth Nordwald, 23, collected more than 500 pounds of the staple foods for distribution through the Agape Ministry of Warren County’s food bank. The girls were challenged by Christy Sutton to give back to their community this summer through a volunteer project. Inspired by a recent viral video from Kid President about food insecurity among kids during summer months, Sutton and Nordwald set out to make a difference. “When you realize that one in five kids doesn’t know where their next meal is coming from, it is easy to want to help out,” said Sutton. “We collected peanut butter and jelly because it is such a common kid food.” Sutton and Nordwald worked with local churches, banks, and the Farm Bureau Board to launch their collection drive. The pair made collection boxes that they distributed to the local businesses. Between June 16 and July 7, the collection box filled up. The peanut butter and jelly that was collected will be distributed by the Agape Ministry of Warren County in its food bank, which feeds more than 1,000 Warren County residents each month. “It is so wonderful to see young people engaged in their community in this way,” said Michelle Bernth, executive director of Agape. “These girls have made a tangible impact in the lives of kids who live in their community who don’t have enough food to eat each day.” Together, Sutton and Nordwald collected 574 pounds of peanut butter and jelly. They plan to do another drive next summer to continue giving back and helping provide food for kids who are hungry. “We want to thank the community for all their support and generosity,” said Nordwald. “We couldn’t have done this without all the support we received.”
