Volunteers have hung purple ribbons, a symbol of cancer awareness, around areas of Warrenton and Wright City as a reminder that Relay For Life of Warren County is near.Relay For Life was created by the American Cancer Society for local communities to raise money for their local cancer programs and cancer research. This years marks the 20th Relay For Life event in Warren County, said Carries Biggs, one of the event’s seven committee members and organizers. The event has a fundraising goal of $50,000. Biggs said they have already collected $30,000 from pre-event fundraising. She said Relay For Life teams hosted a trivia night, a barbecue, raffle purchases and earned a percentage of sales at a play at Belle Star Theatre and several restaurants in Warrenton and Wright City. Another will be held Monday, Aug. 21 at Imo’s in Warrenton.“With the help of the community and our teams, our community is very generous, and our businesses are too. We have a lot of sponsors who help,” Biggs said. “I’m confident with our community and our teams that we can go above this goal.”In 2016, Relay For Life of Warren County raised $52,369.64.This year’s event starts at 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, at Black Hawk Middle School, 302 Kuhl Ave., Warrenton. Through the years, she participated, moved to team captain and then joined the committee. The event was personal because her dad was 34 when he died from cancer. She was 16 at the time. Since then, other family members and friends have dealt with cancer on some level. The American Cancer Society says its goals for Relay For Life are to “remember loved ones lost, honor survivors of all cancers, and raise money to help the American Cancer Society make a global impact on cancer.”The organization reports that Relays are held annual in 5,200 communities and 27 countries.Biggs said donations to the Relay For Life Warren County stay in Warren County for programs like Road to Recovery, which provides car rides to patients who need transportation to receive care; and regular support group meetings and support programs, like Look Good, Feel Good, that help cancer patients feel their best. While Relay For Life is about remembering people who have been lost, there is an atmosphere of hope and support.Biggs said in Warren County, they create an enjoyable family event.“The event is open to public,” she said. “The activities that we’re going to have will be geared to kids and young adults.”2017 Relay For Life of Warren County Schedule3 to 5 p.m. — Registration opens, activities begin: dunk tank, bubble soccer (knocker ball smash), simply a princess characters, kickball tournament and a performance by music by Alex Day.5 p.m. — Next Star Dance Performance, Country Heat dancing activity with Amy Gruenefeld.6 p.m. — Opening ceremonies with the national anthem by Hannah Stevens, prayer by Pastor Hodgson, Hero of Hope Speaker Mark Hollander and “Wind Beneath My Wings” performed by Nancy Butler.6:30 p.m. — Cancer survivors are honored by taking the first lap.7 p.m. — Caregivers are honored with a ceremony and a lap.7:15 p.m. — All teams lap.7:30 p.m. — Performances by Pitch the Keys and Girls Night Out a capella choirs from Warrenton High School.8 p.m. — Fourth Annual Carol Dieckmann Lap, and end of luminaria sales.8:30 p.m. — Luminaria ceremony to honor people touched by cancer.9:30 p.m. — Fight back ceremony and a performance by the Warrenton High School Marching Band.10 p.m. — All team raffles end.11 p.m. — Closing ceremonies.
