Volleyball ‘Cats finish with best record since ‘15

The Wright City ended its best season in 10 years with a three-set loss to eventual district champion Winfield in a Class 3, District 6 semifinal match on Oct. 22 at Winfield. The Wildcats finished with a 15-10-2, their best mark since 16-11 in 2015. 

Wright City began tournament play with a three-set win over Bowling Green, its first district victory since 2021.

Awards were given to juniors Marli Burkhardt and Jaiden Walch and sophomore Emerson Wendt. Burkhardt and Walch were named first-team all-Eastern Missouri Conference selections. Wendt was one of two underclassmen to receive all-league honors, earning second-team recognition.

Burkhardt (first-team), Wendt (second-team) and Walch (honorable mention) were the Wildcats’ representatives on the all-district team.

Burkhardt, a libero, served 16 aces and recorded 448 digs for an average of 8.55 digs per game. Outside hitter Walch had 96 kills and 14 service aces. Wendt ended her season with 154 assists and 28 aces. 

Warriors fall in districts 

Warrenton’s volleyball season came to an end in the Class 4, District 4 quarterfinals in a 3-0 loss to Holt on Oct. 22. 

The Warriors ended their season with a 10-21-2 record. They had wins against Fort Zumwalt East (3-1), Central (2-0), St. James (2-0), Waynesville (2-1), Mexico (2-0, 3-0), Montgomery County (3-0), St. Charles West (3-2), Fulton (3-0) and Wright City (3-0). Sophomore Emma Eskew finished with a school record 27 single-game kills in the win over St. Charles West. 

Two Wildcats earn conference honors

Wright City softball players Ava Swaringen and Harper Martin received second-team Eastern Missouri Conference awards. 

Swaringen, a junior pitcher, struck out 67 batters and allowed 127 hits in 92.3 innings pitched. She also recorded a .410 batting average, 11 runs and 27 RBIs. 

Martin, a freshman catcher, led the team with a .447 batting average. Additionally, Martin had 24 runs and 29 RBIs. Defensively, she recorded 172 outs.
