Wright City Parks held its annual Earth Day event at Diekroeger and Ruge Parks on April 26. Parks department staff and volunteers from the Warrenton Girl Scout Troop 9247 helped clean up the parks and plant trees and flowers in plants around the parks.

“Today we had our annual Earth Day event, it’s something we’ve done the last four or five years and our goal is to do things in the park that are nature-related,” said Parks Director Stuart Bruning. “So everything from planting trees to trimming bushes to trimming bushes to putting down mulch to planting flowers, or even just picking up trash in the park so when people come to the park they can enjoy nature and not have to look at trash.”

Bruning said they planted four trees across the two parks including an eastern redbud and a birch tree in Diekroeger Park as well as flowers in the planters that are scattered around the park.

He said the trees were donated by the Cuivre River Electric Cooperative.

“Every year we’ve done this we’ve asked them if they we’ve asked if they were willing to donate some trees and they’ve been willing to every year,” said Bruning.

Pictured above, from left, are Christiana Church, Riley Gilbert, Jamie Brozek and Harper Brozek who organize flowers in one of the planters on the east side of the park. They were a part of a group of roughly 20 volunteers with the Girl Scout troop.
