Major changes in military veterans’ health care may be coming. The Department of Veterans Affairs is proposing to shift billions of dollars from government-run veterans’ hospitals to private health care providers.Under the proposal plan’s objectives, it would be easier for veterans to receive health care in private hospitals with the government paying for it, The New York Times reported Sunday.Veterans also would be allowed access to a system of walk-in clinics that would be a bridge between V.A. emergency rooms and private providers, and would require co-pays for treatment, The Times said.Long waits at some V.A. hospitals in recent years have reached the scandal stage. V.A. hospitals have had an increasing number of Iraq and Afghanistan veterans, and aging veterans from the Vietnam and Korean wars.According to The Times, Republicans favor this type of a plan while Democrats want more doctors in the V.A. hospitals. An unknown is how the plan would impact private hospitals and, of course, the cost, and where revenue would come from to pay for such a plan. Many of the veterans’ organizations oppose the plan. They fear paying for care would harm the veterans’ health care system, causing some hospitals to close. However, there are individual veterans who believe some V.A. hospitals should close.More details need to be known about the plan. It apparently is far from being completed as negotiations continue in Congress. President Trump may address the issue in his State of the Union talk later this month.
