Ruben Varnado said it wasn’t his best performance, and he was right. But the Warrenton junior thrower was consistent enough to advance to Saturday’s Class 4, Sectional 2 meet at Mexico in the shot put and discus.Varnado’s best shot put toss of 44 feet, 11 inches Saturday was four inches off his personal best.“I thought he was going to do really well with the way he’s been throwing,” Warrenton track coach Steve McDowell said.Varnado said he just wanted to qualify for sectionals, and wasn’t necessarily looking to hit a specific number. But with tougher competition waiting for him in Mexico Saturday, he knows he’ll need an even better performance to advance to the state meet.Varnado is ranked eighth in the discus heading into Saturday’s sectional, but his personal-best toss of 137 feet, 1 inch in the discus has him in third place.“I’m hoping to hit 145,” he said. “The people coming over from the other districts are pretty good, but I know I’ll make it.”Parkway Central’s Miles Sanders and Hannibal’s Dylan Powell have both cleared 150 feet this season and appear to be Varnado’s biggest competition Saturday.“He’s got some good confidence going into the weekend,” McDowell said. “Hopefully he can keep getting better and better each time.”Varnado isn’t the only favorite on the Warrenton boys team.Senior Jacob Crump is ranked second in the sectional in the 300 hurdles and fourth in the 200-meter.Crump is also expected to run in the 800 relay and the 400.“I’ve been asking him if he’s good and if he can recover in time, and he’s proven that he can,” McDowell said. “His times weren’t as stellar as what they had been, but the goal was to get through the qualification, and he did. He’s just a gutty performer. I think he’s got an opportunity to make it in four events if things go well for him.”The 800 relay team of Crump, Braydan Chmiel, Dylan Chandler and Keagan Michelson finished second in Saturday’s district meet at Westminster with a time of 1 minute, 33.33 seconds, which is 10th best in the sectional.“We were a little bit off of our PR, but it was tough running conditions,” McDowell said. “It was nice to compete and I think we’ll match up well, but we’ll have to shave a little time off this Saturday. I think we’re in the hunt for it.”The Warriors had light workouts Monday and began looking at Saturday’s competition.“I told the guys today that we just have to go out and set another P.R.,” McDowell said. “We discussed what the competition will look like, and we’ll look at these other teams’ P.R.s and see where we match up. I feel very confident if they come out and perform well, we’ll be looking at a trip to Jeff City.”
