When: Friday, Oct. 2Where: Wright City High SchoolTime: 7 p.m.Coaches: Van-Far — Blake Logan. Wright City — Jeff Sargent.Records: Van-Far — 3-3 overall, 1-3 in EMO. Wright City — 3-3 overall, 2-2 in EMO.Last Year’s Meeting: Van-Far 24, Wright City 18.Injuries and fatigue doomed the Wildcats in the conference road loss. Wright City owned a two-touchdown lead throughout the first half, but the host Indians stormed back behind quarterback Lucas Robinson. He scored on a short run in the third quarter to ignite a rally and then tied the game with a 21-yard scoring pass. Van-Far scored the winning touchdown with 1:50 remaining.Kyle Tuepker scored twice on short runs to give the Wildcats an 18-6 lead at halftime. Clayton Sharp had a 55-yard touchdown reception in the second quarter.Outlook: Wright City has lost two straight and needs to regroup heading into this week’s Homecoming matchup. Van-Far also is coming off a loss, a 50-36 defeat to Bowling Green last Friday. The conference game was tied 30-30 at the half, but the Bobcats scored twice in the third quarter to pull away.Since opening the season with two victories — against North Shelby and Mexico Military Academy — the Indians have won just one of their last four games. Their last win came in a 26-7 triumph over Montgomery County.Van-Far relies heavily on wide receiver Nick Barnes on offense. The 6-foot-2 senior has scored 11 touchdowns this season. He has caught 16 passes for 265 yards and rushed 10 times for 158 yards. For Wright City, quarterback Andrew Pfuhl has thrown for 1,442 yards and 12 touchdowns. He also has been picked off eight times. Senior running back DeRenzo Blanks had rushed for a team-high 577 yards, while Troy Muse and Tyler Brittain lead the team in receptions with 27 and 23, respectively. On defense, linebacker Austin Buchheit has a team-high 80 tackles.Bottom Line: Wright City cannot afford a letdown this week and must overcome the distractions that Homecoming brings. If the Wildcats start slow, Van-Far can be dangerous and could keep the score close. But Wright City needs its seniors to step up and provide the leadership to get back over the .500 mark.—By Tim Schmidt, Record Managing EditorWildcats
