Vacek, McCauley win conference tournament

Two Warrenton wrestlers recently took home first-place finishes at the Gateway Athletic Conference Tournament on Jan. 11. 

Junior Allison Vacek and senior Manny McCauley reigned victorious in their respective weight classes. Vacek, who now holds a 13-1 season record, defeated all four of her opponents in the 155-pound weight class. 

She claimed her first-place title after defeating Troy Buchanan’s Molly Marischen. In addition, Vacek won her first two matches in a combined time of one minute, 45 seconds. 

McCauley claimed the 126-pound weight class title. He also won all four of his matches and now holds a 21-1 season record. McCauley won his first three matches by technical fall. In the championship round, he won by a 9-1 major decision over Fort Zumwalt North’s Carsten Burkemper. 

The Warriors had four additional wrestlers place. Alexis Ruff earned a fourth-place finish in the 120-class, while Noah Lohrmann medaled fourth in the 138-class. In the 130-class, freshman Melanie Guerrero took home a sixth-place finish, and Dakota Lohrmann placed sixth in the 125-class. 

Ruff won her first two matches until she fell in the semifinals to Fort Zumwalt South’s Paige Tihen. Ruff went on to defeat Francis Howell Central’s Kailyn Parsons but fell to Francis Howell North’s Layla Pohtos in the second round. She is now 19-4 in the season. 

Noah also won his first two matches, until he lost by a 13-11 decision to Fort Zumwalt North’s Patrick Provost. In the next match, Noah won by a 21-7 major decision, but later lost by an 8-3 decision to Holt’s Chad Benwell in the third-place match. Noah only had one loss coming into the tournament. His record now stands at 20-3. 

Guerrero had two wins, one bye and three losses. In the fifth-place match, she lost by a 9-2 decision to senior Jenna Smith. Dakota had three wins and three losses. She lost in the fifth-place match to Fort Zumwalt’s Bella Antal. Guerrero moved on to a 13-11 record, while Dakota holds a 19-7 record. 

Overall, both the boys and girls wrestling teams placed 10th. The girls team will compete next in the St. Charles Invitational on Jan.17, while the boys will compete on Jan. 18.
