Upgrades await students as R-III opens classes

Students in the Warren County R-III School District return to buildings across the district Thursday to begin the 2017-18 school year.Upon their arrival, they will find several changes, including new entrances to each of the buildings. Construction was completed on security vestibules at four of the buildings and is expected to be finished soon at Black Hawk Middle School.“Our custodial and maintenance crews have been outstanding, as they’ve been coming in behind the construction crews and getting our buildings ready,” said Assistant Superintendent Dr. Aaron Jones.“They’ve been doing work that would normally take most of the summer and getting it done in a matter of weeks.”Advanced security entrances are in place at Daniel Boone, Rebecca Boone and Warrior Ridge Elementary schools, along with Warrenton High School. Those visiting during school hours will have to press the security button twice, once outside and again before entering a second set of doors that will reroute them into the office before being allowed access into the main building. An unforeseen issue was encountered during construction at the middle school, but Jones anticipates the new entrance will be ready for use soon after Labor Day.“The exterior work at Black Hawk is running behind, but the interior of the building will be ready for the start of the school year,” said Jones. Also at the high school, new HVAC systems have been installed and a new concrete delivery pad is complete on the southwest side of the building. Work continues on a new multipurpose gymnasium but is expected to be finished by its target date of late October or early November.Rebecca Boone Elementary also received HVAC upgrades, as well as new sidewalks in front of the building and a new ramp with handrails at the back entrance. Both Daniel Boone Elementary and Black Hawk Middle School will have completely new main offices through which to enter the building. Of the elementary schools, Daniel Boone has undergone the most noticeable exterior changes, with the new security entrance including a loop drive for parents to drop off and pick up students.“There shouldn’t be a considerable difference, except where the kids walk into the buildings with the entrances,” said Jones. “We expect school to go as planned, and we’re excited for it to start.”
