Warrenton residents who were evacuated from their homes earlier today are now allowed to return, officials said.

A representative from Ameren Missouri will visit each home and turn the gas back on, according to a post made on the Warrenton Fire Protection District's Facebook page. All streets are open in the area that was affected by the gas leak.

Here is the previous story.

Emergency crews are working to evacuate residents in the area of Cherry Street and Flora Avenue in Warrenton due to a gas leak.

Officials are also temporarily shutting down Highway 47 between Veterans Memorial Parkway and Main Street. Traffic is being detoured.

Crews indicated it may be up to two hours before residents are allowed to return to their homes.

The incident was reported around 11:20 a.m. According to unofficial reports, a crew working in the area struck a gas line.
