A 19-year-old Troy woman who police say was abducted by her ex-boyfriend Thursday morning managed to escape by popping open the trunk to her car at a Wright City gas station.
Police said the victim was shaken up, but was unharmed.
The suspect accused in the abduction was identified as Jon Paul Heinz, 22, of Elsberry. He was arrested later that day in Bloomington, Ill. A felony kidnapping charge has been filed by prosecutors. He was being held in lieu of a $50,000 cash-only bond.
Police said Heinz drove to Bloomington because his father lives in the area.
The female victim had left her home and was driving along Highway U outside of Troy around 8:20 a.m. when she noticed that an interior light was on indicating that her trunk was open. She then got out of her car and Heinz was in the trunk wearing a ski mask and an orange sweatshirt, police said.
Heinz then grabbed the woman and forced her into the trunk.
Heinz drove to Wright City and briefly stopped at the city cemetery prior to going to a nearby gas station on the North Service Road. Wright City Police Chief Douglas Saulters said the suspect was seen on video surveillance entering the store and looking around, but that he did not purchase any items.
The man returned to the vehicle and at the time he was beginning to back up, the woman pulled a release cord opening the trunk, police said.
The woman ran to a nearby vehicle and told the driver about the abduction. The Good Samaritan drove the victim to the Wright City Police Department around 8:44 a.m., Saulters said.
Police identified Heinz as a person of interest because he attempted to abduct the same woman Feb. 8 at St. Charles Community College. The woman got an order of protection against Heinz following the incident. Charges are being sought in that case, authorities said.
