The mud run driver whose vehicle crashed into a building at the Warren County Fair remains in critical condition.
A Mercy Hospital spokesman said the driver, identified as Stephen Lanvermeier, of Old Monroe, was listed in critical condition as of Monday morning.
He was airlifted to the hospital following the crash Saturday evening, July 5.See the July 10 edition of The Record for more on this story.Here is the previous story reported.Emergency officials responded to a vehicle crash that occurred around 4:30 p.m. at the Warren County Fairgrounds on Saturday.A participant in the dry track portion of the mud run event of the Warren County Fair lost control of his vehicle, exiting the track area and crashing into a building after becoming airborne.Firefighters from the Hawk Point and Warrenton Fire Protection Districts were able to extricate the driver and extinguish a small fire that ignited in the car once it had landed.The driver of the vehicle was injured and transported to a local hospital by helicopter. The extent of the driver's injuries are unknown.A spectator sustained minor injuries while trying to avoid the out-of-control vehicle. The bystander was not struck by the vehicle and refused to be transported by ambulance.The vehicle entered the building, which is used to store 4-H projects for viewing by fair-goers, on the southeast corner.The cause of the crash is unknown at this time and is under investigation by the Warrenton Police Department.Following the incident, the event did resume once additional barriers were put in place and the walkway near the end of the track was closed to pedestrians.Saturday was the final day of the fair.
