Warren County R-III Superintendent Dr. Jim Chandler will vacate his administrative post to pursue a lifelong passion. The school board announced last week that it has accepted Chandler’s request to be released from his contract to retire effective June 30, 2017.After 25 years in public education, including the last four as R-III superintendent, Chandler will now spend his time on the basketball sidelines.“I’m chasing a dream,” said Chandler, who has accepted a position as head women’s basketball coach at his alma mater, Blackburn College in Illinois.“I had an opportunity that’s come up and have always said that when I retire I want to go back into coaching,” he said. “I’m excited and looking forward to that opportunity. It came up kind of late, but I had a relationship with people at the school and was able to make things work.”Chandler says he talked with his family and considered his options moving forward.“I knew I had reached a stage where I could look at retirement,” said Chandler. “I visited with the people from the retirement system and saw how I could make it work and decided if I’m going to get into college coaching, this is an opportunity, and they’re far and few between.”Chandler, who is a Warrenton graduate, returned to his hometown prior to the 2013-14 school year after serving as an administrator in the Winfield School District. He says his proudest accomplishments center around growth.“The achievement gains and attendance gains and passing the bond issues are things everyone has always been proud of,” said Chandler. “It’s been a true pleasure to be able to see the growth that took place here and see some improvements, and now I get an opportunity to get to another school I graduated from and help build something. I wish everyone at Warren County R-III the best in future and appreciate the opportunity we had.”The school board will begin conducting a search for a new head superintendent soon. In the interim, Assistant Superintendent Dr. Aaron Jones and Assistant Superintendent Dr. Jill Schowe will serve as co-superintendents.
