Up-and-down effort costs Warrenton in home loss

For every step forward the Warrenton girls' basketball team takes this season, the Warriors tend to take a step back.

The team, winners of three of the team’s last four games, including an impressive win at St. Charles West on February 10, took that proverbial step back on Wednesday.

Playing host to Montgomery County in a non-conference game, Warrenton jumped to an early lead in the first quarter. By the end of the quarter, the Wildcats tied the score and just kept rolling from there in the 48-31 win.

Warrenton sophomore guard Emory Martinez said the team’s results directly correlate with the grit and hustle the team puts forth on the floor.

“We just need to put more effort into this and work harder in practice,” Martinez said. “(In the wins), we worked together as a team. We have to get back to that.”

As Warrenton (9-13) struggled to find its way in the game, Montgomery County (16-10) managed to shake off any early struggles as the team heated up from the floor.

The Wildcats attacked the basket and, first, caught up to Warrenton at 13 at the end of the first quarter before taking the game over in the second with a litany of 3-point plays after shots fell on the tail end of Warrenton fouls.

Warriors coach Hannah Logan said that the simple act of putting the ball in the basket was a major difference on Wednesday.

The coach added that it’s tough to watch the team head on a downward trajectory after a few tough plays.

“They shot the ball well and got things to fall,” Logan said. “On our end. We were looking for fouls to be called and not finishing the shot and scoring the two points. I think, as a team, we need to work on toughness, finishing, and just being disciplined. We have really good stretches, but we have really bad stretches. Once we hit a bad stretch, we can’t get out of it.”

In the loss, junior guard Sophia Benke and sophomore guard Claire Goldsmith led the way with seven points apiece. Sophomore Ava Schnieder added five points.

Warrenton (9-13) will next play at 6:30 p.m. on Friday at St. Charles.

“We really wanted to head into districts on a six-game win streak,” said Logan, referring to the downturn in results. “We’re just going to have to get after it now, starting with (St. Charles) and do our best to be playing as well as we can when the postseason starts.”
