As the days dwindle before the MAC tournament in early February, the Liberty Christian Academy boys' basketball team is working hard to secure wins to improve its seeding.
While the Eagles play for, likely, either a No. 2 or 3 seed, each conference game matters, as underscored by the team’s 89-44 win at home on Thursday over Victory Christian.
Liberty (16-5 overall) moved to a 7-1 conference record behind Westwood Baptist’s 9-0 mark on the strength of a strong first quarter, after which the team led 26-8.
The team received a quartet of strong performances from its big three and another, as well, as junior guard Phoenix Obermann wound up just short of a triple-double with 27 points, nine assists and seven steals.
Senior post player Willy Mueller maintained his torrid pace on the scoreboard while adding to his school-record rebound total as he scored 20 points and added 20 rebounds.
Tommy Meyer’s 18 points rounded out the big three’s onslaught while Ryder Carlisle added even more offensive depth with 10 points of his own.
Liberty returns to the court at 7 p.m. tonight to face conference foe Thomas Jefferson (5-10, 2-6).
ST. JAMES 56, WARRENTON 46 – Try as they might, the Warriors had trouble staying with top-seeded St. James in the teams’ semifinal game of the 47th annual Hermann Invitational.
A 14-12 deficit after the first quarter was just 29-26 at halftime before St. James scored 18 third-quarter points to put enough space between themselves and the Warriors.
“We just couldn’t keep pace with them,” Warrenton coach Mark Thomas said.
Warrenton (7-11) was led by senior guard Brodey Meier’s 15 points while fellow senior guard Jay Sanders added 11 against the Tigers (12-6).
The Warriors will wrap up the event at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, when the team plays for third place against the host Bearcats (12-8).
MONTGOMERY COUNTY 50, WRIGHT CITY 45 – In a game where Wright City (3-14) got off to a strong start, the Wildcats faded down the stretch.
Wright City, which hasn’t defeated its Eastern Missouri Conference rival since January of 2011, led 16-8 after the first quarter and 24-21 at halftime before fading against the Wildcats (11-7).
Wright City will now play in the seventh-place game at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday against New Haven (6-11).
Previously, Wright City lost 60-53 at New Haven on Dec. 12.
FORT ZUMWALT WEST GIRLS 54, WARRENTON 45 – In a consolation semifinal of the 12th annual Washington Tournament, the Warriors couldn’t catch up to the Jaguars.
A 9-8 deficit at the end of the first quarter turned into a 24-18 halftime lead for the Jaguars.
Warrenton (5-10) was led on the scoreboard by senior forward Makayla Witthaus’ 11 points while junior guard Sophia Benke and senior forward Zoe Duncan pitched in nine, and sophomore guard Ava Schneider added seven.
The Warriors will finish the tournament at 4 p.m. today when the team plays Summit (7-10) for seventh place.
