Warrenton boys win back-to-back GAC North duals titles

For the second straight season, the Warrenton boys wrestling team proved itself to be the cream of the crop in GAC North wrestling.

The Warriors came away with a second straight conference dual title, defeating every other conference team in head-to-head competition.

Coach Clayton Olsson summed the night up succinctly.

“It was just a really good night,” Olsson said. “Winning back-to-back titles was something we hadn’t done since 2016-17. It was a nice cherry on top.”

Warrenton defeated St. Charles (by a 59-22 score), Orchard Farm (51-12), Winfield (68-12), St. Charles West (65-12) and Holt (51-21).

The Warriors earned 52 wins during the duals while losing only eight times.

On the girls' side, Warrenton finished third, going 3-2 at the event. The girls amassed a 26-4 record at the event.

The Warriors got the best of Orchard Farm (35-24), Winfield (34-24) and Holt (29-24). The team fell in duals against St. Charles (42-21) and St. Charles West (52-27).

Olsson credited his wrestlers for taking a fierce approach to the meet.

“They were on the attack,” Olsson said. “(They were) trying to score points and just wrestled really great.”

The coach added that intense preparation has proven key for both teams.

“At practice, we go through some mindset principles to make sure we’re focused on the right things,” Olsson said. “(Those things are) being relentless, aggressive, wrestling without fear, and never giving up, and, overall, just being thankful for the opportunity to perform. They all really embodied that.”

Some of the individual highlights included: technical fall wins for Jamarion Fulton over St. Charles, Nathan Donovan over St. Charles West, Zayden Teson over Winfield, and Cam Alexander over Orchard Farm.

Also, Colton Tinker won by fall over Holt in 18 seconds, Daniel McChristy pinned his foe from the Indians in 20 seconds, and Korben Johnson also beat his Holt opponent in 21 seconds.

On the girls' side, Dakota Lohrmann went 4-0 in her matches with wins over St. Charles (by fall in 3:17), Holt (by fall in 1:05), St. Charles West (in an 18-13 decision), and Winfield (by technical fall).

Alexis Ruff went 3-0 in her matches, winning over Holt (by technical fall in 2:19), over St. Charles West (by fall in 1:28) and over Winfield (by technical fall in 1:13).
