It’s that time of the year when I begin searching diligently for story material, justifying even the most unathletic of events as sports. With the interest in American Legion baseball taking a considerable dive over the past decade, summer sports have become limited in Warren County. There is only one Post 122 team this year, and several of its games have been postponed due to rainy weather. This upcoming week, however, will provide an opportunity for locals to enjoy other types of sports-related events. The county is hosting several events this weekend and the fair will bring more activities to Warrenton throughout next week.On Saturday morning, Innsbrook will host the Ultramax 5150 Triathlon, featuring two different events, beginning at 7:30 a.m.The longer of the two races includes a 1.5K swim, 40K bike ride and 10K run.The shorter race is comprised of a 500-yard swim, 18-mile bike ride and three-mile run.Motorists on state and county roads, including Stracks Church, Highway M and Highway F, should be aware of bicyclists traveling these roads on Saturday morning. The remainder of the race will take place within the confines of Innsbrook, including Aspen Lake.A few miles down the road, Cedar Lake Winery will also be hosting an outdoor, adventure-style event. The Zombie Run 5K is an obstacle-course run with an added challenge of avoiding the “zombies” along the course. Each participant has flags he or she will try to protect while running the course. The zombie volunteers will attempt to swipe the flags. If a runner completes the course with at least one flag still intact, it is considered a success.Registration is still open for the event through race day, with a cost of $79 per person. Teams are also encouraged.Next week the Fair will kick off its first activity on the track with the mud run on Wednesday.Thursday will feature three events, with the popular new lawnmower derby beginning at 5:30 p.m. The car demolition derby will follow, with the cowboy mounted shooters taking place simultaneously in the rodeo arena.Even if you are not into car crashes and mud, there are usually plenty of unexpected happenings surrounding the event. And the cowboy mounted shooting will feature several locals taking part in an intriguing, relatively new sport that is gaining popularity. The truck pull will take place on Friday at 7 p.m.Saturday evening will close the fair with MotoCross and the tractor pull each beginning at 7 p.m.Hopefully these events will provide enough excitement to help locals through the summer and into the approaching fall sports seasons.
The Marthasville Mud Bog will be held this Saturday, June 13.
