Wright City girls soccer coach Tori Harris has boiled everything she wants to see from her team down to two words – simple and smart.
On Wednesday, that’s exactly how the Wildcats played – simple and smart – in a continuous effort that led to a 7-0 home win over crosstown Liberty Christian.
Senior midfielder Sandy Lopez-Luna, who tallied one of the goals, said the straightforward mentality paid off.
“I think we did take the simple approach, we played very well today,” Lopez-Luna said. “Are passes weren’t always (crisp), but I think our team effort was really good. I think we showed today that everyone on this team knows how to get up and down the field.”
That team effort led to five different goal scorers. The even effort led to Wright City leading 3-0 at halftime before the finishing efforts.
Junior Ada Ferrell scored in the 22nd and 61st minutes; freshman Haley Elsenrath added goals in the 43rd and 46th minutes; Lopez-Luna in the 25th; and Addie Ward in the 38th.
Olivia Wilson finished the scoring in the 63rd minute when she drilled a header off a corner to make it 7-0.
“We wanted to come out and work on some things,” Harris said. “Our first touch was not the best the other night. Today, we wanted to work on our first touch, switching the field. In the beginning, we were a little slow but then we began playing simple and smart.”
Marli Burkhardt earned the shutout in goal for the Wildcats (3-3).
Things could have been much worse for Liberty (1-4-1) if not for the play of goalkeeper Laila Barron.
“She was awesome,” Dildine said. “The game could have ended so much worse if not for how she played. Every time you go against a big school, you worry (about the mercy rule). All the big schools we’ve played, and we have not been mercy-ruled, and in my book, that’s a win. She stood on her head the entire game.”
WARRENTON VOLLEYBALL DEFEATS HICKMAN IN FIVE SETS – It was a long day for the Warrenton boys volleyball team, but one that was well worth it.
After taking the first two sets, Warrenton (3-3) dropped the next two before winning the decisive set and the match, 25-17, 27-25, 22-25, 24-26, 15-12.
Teegan Williams had a monster night, recording 31 of the team’s 55 kills in the victory.
Matthew Faubion led the team with 43 assists, while Kaleb Lauck’s three blocked shots were a team-high for the Warriors.
The win was the third straight for the team after opening the season with three straight defeats.
Warrenton will host Fort Zumwalt East at 5:30 p.m. tonight.
WARRENTON BASEBALL FALLS TO ST. CHARLES WEST – It was a new day, but unfortunately for Warrenton, the same result.
For the second straight day, Warrenton dropped a close decision to conference foe, St. Charles West, by a 5-4 score on a walk-off hit.
Warrenton (5-4) scored two first-inning runs and added two more in the seventh to tie the game.
The first-inning runs came on a Carter Martin RBI groundout to score Ric Standley and a Keeton Young double, which scored pinch runner Deadrick Forrest.
Down 4-2 in the seventh, an RBI groundout by Jake Kirkpatrick and a run-scoring single from Martin tied the score at four.
Standley suffered the loss.
Warrenton will next renew its Warren County rivalry with Wright City at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday at Fort Zumwalt East.
