Two Wright City grapplers win weight class at home tourney

Two Wright City wrestlers had perfect days in their season opening tournament to earn first place in their respective weight classes. 

Seniors Elizabeth Riggs and Samantha Yates each won all of their matches to win their weight class at the Lady Wildcats Tournament Nov. 18. Riggs won the 130-pound weight class. Yates won the 115-pound weight class. 

Riggs earned wins by fall in all four of her matches. She beat Kyndal Witt of Palmyra, Zoey Richardson of Moberly, CJ Sullivan of Union and Zoe Fisher of Pacific. She beat Richardson and Sullivan in less than a minute.

Yates won all five of her matches by fall to win the 115-pound weight class. Yates earned wins over Makayla Sahno of Pacific, Karen Dietzler of Sullivan, Alexis Ruff of Warrenton, Annabelle Berendzen of Hallsville and Lilly Debo of Mexico. She beat Sahno and Debo in less than a minute. 

A freshman, Ruff placed second at the season opening tournament. She earned wins over Annabelle Berendzen of Hallsville, Lily Debo of Mexico, Karen Dietzler of Sullivan and Makayla Sahno of Pacific in the 115-pound weight class. Ruff beat Debo and Sahno by fall. 

Warrenton’s Dakota Lohrmann won three matches to place second in her weight class. Wrestling in the 120-pound weight class, Lohrmann beat Saira Rosales of Pacific, Jashayla Johnson of Mexico and Malika Sturm by fall. Lohrmann’s matches against Johnson and Rosales lasted less than a minute. Lohrmann’s lone loss came to Mariah Denney of Sullivan by fall. 

Wright City sophomores Kali Jensen and Sadie Sehnert also won three matches to place second in their weight classes. Jensen beat Kiya Smith of Mexico, Natalie Sibert of Warrenton and teammate Liliana Wiedemeier by fall in the 125-pound weight class. She lost to Riah Wigfall of Hannibal on a 6-4 decision. 

Sehnert won all four of her opening round matches before falling in the championship match in the 135-pound weight class. Sehnert beat Trinity Lawton of Pacific, Alyssa Knight or Mexico and Abigail Bowen of Mexico by fall. She beat teammate Sara Sehnert on a 9-2 decision. Sadie Sehnert lost by fall to Caitlyn Sullivan of Osage in the first place match. 

Ella Greenwell Washburn also placed second. She lost both of her matches to Alexus Johns of Mexico. 

Liliana Wiedemeier and Lauren Ritter both won multiple matches to place third in their weight classes. Wiedemeier beat Natalie Sibert of Warrenton and Kiya Smith of Mexico by fall. She lost by fall to Jensen and on a 5-4 decision to Riah Wigfall of Hannibal.

Competing in the 140-pound weight class, Ritter beat Ember Reese of Pacific and Jolee Lockhart of Wright City by fall. She lost by fall to Avery St. Clair of Moberly and by technical fall to Jade Studdard of Sullivan. 

Warrenton Natalie Sibert and Wright City’s Kailin Hawn placed fourth in their weight classes. Wright City’s Jolee Lockhart and Sara Sehnert placed fifth. Warrenton’s Allison Vacek placed sixth in the 170-pound weight class. Vacek won three matches. Hawn and Sehnert won two matches. 

Wright City was slated to compete at Owensville Nov. 21. They will compete in a home triangular Nov. 30. Warrenton will compete at Hannibal Nov. 29.
