As the Warrenton boys golf team set out to compete in the Gateway Athletic Conference (GAC) North Tournament last week, the team and coach Aaron Jinkerson knew there would be an opportunity for some individual accolades even as the overall team championship was seemingly not in reach.
In the end, the Warriors finished in second place as a team behind St. Charles West.
“Heading into the tournament, from a team perspective, it was going to be a challenge to leapfrog St. Charles West for the overall team title,” said Jinkerson. “They had had a perfect season in matches as a team and we were outside the point range to really catch up.”
Individually, Gabe Frederick earned second-team all conference with a 92 and Shane Brosenne earned first-team honors with a 77.
“Shane was in contention to earn player of the year honors heading into the tournament. His second place finish in the tournament put him just short of earning player of the year honors,” said Jinkerson. “I was happy with how Shane handled himself during the tournament, but I know he was a little disappointed not to be our conference player of the year.”
Frederick also had a good deal of success.
“Heading into the tournament Gabe was on the borderline of bringing home first or second-team all conference honors. He was playing well heading into the tournament and I thought it was fantastic that he had a chance to bring home all conference honors in his first full varsity season,” Jinkerson said. “Gabe's score of 92 was good enough to earn him enough points to earn second-team GAC North honors. I have no doubt that next year Gabe will be competing, if not making an appearance, on the first team.”
In addition to Brosenne and Frederick, a few other Warriors picked up some valuable experience.
“Andrew Cox, Owen Thompson, and Maison Rader all had different experiences on the course during the tournament. Andrew Cox finished 11th overall with a 98. I was very pleased with how Andrew played and handled himself all season,” said Jinkerson, “(And) the experience (Owen and Maison) gained this season will help them tremendously next year.”
Warrenton will be represented at the state golf tournament next week thanks to a strong performance from Shane Brosenne.
The Warrenton senior carded a 13-over 83 to place 12th at the Class 4, District 2 Tournament held Monday at Wolf Hollow. Brosenne will compete in the Class 4 state tournament on Monday and Tuesday at Twin Hills Country Club in Joplin.
As a team, the Warriors shot a 436 to place 13th in the field. DeSmet won the district crown with a 327. Washington’s Brennan Strubberg shot a 2-over 73 to win top medalist honors.
Other golfers competing for Warrenton were Gabe Frederick (52nd, 103), Maison Rader (65th, 123), Owen Thompson (66th, 126) and Andrew Cox (67th, 127).
