The Missouri State Highway Patrol is investigating drunk driving as the possible cause of a five-car crash east of Kansas City Sunday evening that claimed the lives of two children from Warrenton.The patrol said Chloe Beaird, 7, and Gavin Beaird, 13, died at the scene of the 6:03 p.m. crash on eastbound Interstate 70 near Blue Springs.Their parents, David C. Beaird, 39, and Jennifer L. Beaird, 37, were seriously injured in the crash, according to the patrol report. They were taken by ambulance to area hospitals for treatment.A third person, James L. Green, 60, of Odessa, was treated for minor injuries at an area hospital.Green was taken into custody later for allegedly driving while intoxicated in connection with the fatal crash, according to an arrest report on the highway patrol’s website.He may face multiple charges including two counts of manslaughter, two counts of assault, careless and imprudent driving and driving while revoked, according to the arrest report.According to the crash report, Green was driving a 2000 Cadillac Escalade that struck the rear of the 2015 Hyundai Elantra driven by David Beaird.The Green vehicle then struck another eastbound car, which in turn slammed into two other vehicles, according to the report. None of the drivers of the three other cars were listed as being injured.Missouri Department of Transportation officials and officers with the Blue Springs Police Department also assisted at the crash scene.
