Two Warrenton men pled guilty Monday to setting four vehicles on fire, including three belonging to local law enforcement agencies. Corey Michael Puetz, 21, and Xavier Damon Washington, 19, entered their plea to four felony federal arson counts before U.S. District Judge Carol E. Jackson. Both men went on a three-day crime spree in August that included torching a Warren County deputy’s car and two Warrenton Police Department cruisers. They also stole a vehicle, set it on fire on the railroad tracks and broke into a Warrenton home prior to being arrested Aug. 14 following a citizen’s tip. Puetz and Washington will face maximum penalties of five to 20 years in prison and/or fines of up to $250,000 on each count when they are sentenced March 1, 2011. The first police car set on fire occurred in the early morning hours of Aug. 12 when a deputy’s patrol car parked at the county-owned lot located one block south of the courthouse was destroyed. Sheriff Kevin Harrison said a flaming rag on a stick was placed into the fuel tank of the car, a 2005 Chevrolet Impala. A deputy noticed a fire in the parking lot and reported it at 1:41 a.m. By the time firefighters arrived the rear of the car was completely engulfed in flames. The following morning, the suspects set fire to two Warrenton patrol cars parked outside city hall. An alert officer who was inside the police station kept damage to a minimum when he heard a noise outside and extinguished a rear tire that was ablaze. The cars had been parked next to each other and had been sprayed with an accelerant, according to authorities. The fourth vehicle to be set on fire was a stolen 1997 Ford F-150 pickup. The truck, stolen from a residence on South Morgan Street, was later discovered destroyed Aug. 13 after being placed on the railroad tracks near the Highway 47 overpass. Puetz and Washington also are facing state felony charges for stealing a motor vehicle, first-degree burglary and stealing.
