By Chris OrletRecord Managing EditorA Valentine's Day evening domestic assault in rural Jonesburg has left two people dead and two people fighting for their lives.Shawn M. Kavanagh, 23, of the 300 block of South Main Street in Bellflower, Mo. was charged Saturday with two counts of first-degree murder, assault, domestic assault, armed criminal action and burglary, according to a statement issued by Warren County Sheriff Kevin Harrison.At approximately 7:45 p.m. Friday, Shawn Kavanagh allegedly went to a home in the 26000 block of Humber Road off Highway Y south of Jonesburg, where his estranged wife Jescie Powell Kavanagh, 27, was staying with a 29-year-old co-worker from the New Florence Care Center in New Florence, and her two children. Another co-worker, Tara Lynn Fifer, 22, of Montgomery City, had stopped by the home to check on Kavanagh shortly before the attack occurred, a friend of the family told the Record.Authorities said after the women told Kavanagh to leave, he allegedly went to his car, retrieved a knife, and began attacking the women and the boy.Harrison said a man placed a 9-1-1 call at 7:51 p.m. and told the dispatcher that he had just stabbed his wife and killed several other people.When police arrived, they found Kavanagh covered in blood, said Harrison. Kavanagh told police that he had just killed the people inside the home.Jescie Kavanagh and the homeowner's 8-year-old boy were airlifted to a hospital in Columbia, Mo., for treatment of multiple stab wounds.Fifer and the unidentified homeowner were found dead inside the home. The homeowner's 18-month-old female child was found unharmed inside the home.Investigators from the Warrenton and Wright City police departments were called in to assist the sheriff’s department in the investigation.Family members said Jescie Kavanagh remains in an ICU trauma unit with an estimated recovery time of one month. She underwent several hours of heart surgery and had to be placed on a ventilator to breathe.Shawn Kavanagh was charged with misdemeanor domestic assault in January. The couple were married for ten months before separating three weeks ago, family members said. He was being held without bail.
Jescie Kavanagh is in critical condition at a Columbia Mo. hospital.
