Turning Point recognizes April as sexual assault awareness month

Turning Point recognizes the prevalence of sexual violence locally. In recognition of April’s Sexual Assault Awareness Month, Turning Point is raising awareness of available services by displaying large banners at various businesses and community partners. The organization is looking for partners who will display the banner for two weeks to let the community know that sexual violence is not tolerated in the community.About one in three women will experience a completed or an attempted rape in her lifetime. In 2016, Missouri residents reported 558 forcible rapes to law enforcement, but there are many more incidents of unwanted sexual contact than forcible rape, although the impact is similar, and a small percentage of sexual violence is actually reported.Despite low reporting, victims of sexual violence need services. Turning Point provides shelter, support groups, court advocacy, peer support and counseling. All services are free and confidential. The organization does not call law enforcement or force survivors to do anything that does not meet their needs.Any business or service provider interested in displaying a banner can email Ellen Reed, executive director, executive.director@turningpointdvs.com.Turning Point provides services throughout the east central Missouri counties of Warren, Montgomery, Gasconade, Lincoln, Franklin and western St. Charles. For more information, call 888.873.7233 or visit www.facebook.com/TurningPointWMO.Turning Point
