Turning Point Advocacy Services is hosting “Boots ‘n Bling and Still Social Distancing,” an online auction opening April 20 and closing April 24.
Among the items is a one-week stay at “Eagle’s Nest,” a dreamy, luxury mountain retreat in Big Fork, Mont. Other items include St. Louis Cardinals baseball tickets, an overnight stay in Augusta, jewelry, wine and more. Bids start as low as $20.
The online event replaces the annual Boots ‘n Bling event that had been scheduled for April 17 at Innsbrook. Proceeds benefit Turning Point, a nonprofit organization that provides support to victims of domestic and sexual violence.
“Covid-19 is forcing everyone around the world to isolate. We knew our in-person event couldn’t happen, but the fundraising has to continue because the need is even greater,” said Laura Adams, board director, Turning Point.
She explained, “As families are forced into isolation, victims are sequestered with their abusers. Tensions are high and finances may be strained. That’s a petri dish for the controlling and abusive behaviors that define domestic and sexual violence.”
Besides providing emergency shelter and services for victims, Turning Point provides hope. Adams says the funds raised at Boots ’n Bling, the organization’s annual fundraiser, help make that possible.
“This year, it’s a different kind of fundraiser for us. We’ll miss seeing the faces of our supporters, but we’ll know they are there by the purchases and donations they make. And we’re excited to welcome people who have not participated before. Anyone with internet access with a computer or smartphone can visit, donate, and place bids during the online auction,” said Adams.
The online auction opens at noon, Monday, April 20. Go to www.turningpointdvs.com/home/events and follow the links to the auction. The auction closes at 8 p.m. Friday, April 24. The highest bidders will be notified. Secured billing is completed on the site.
The auction will work in concert with Turning Point’s Facebook page, which will offer posts about featured items and other information.
“The beauty of an online event is you can participate from your couch, in your pajamas, and you can invite all your friends,” said Adams. “No price for admission and no waiting in line. It’s a chance to help someone with more problems and fewer resources, while we’re all at home trying to keep ourselves and each other safe.”
