Truesdale Mayor Chris Watson, who announced his resignation during the May 24 board of aldermen meeting, was honored at the start of the city’s Railroad Days: Summerfest on June 3.
Board of Alderman President Jerry Cannon recognized the outgoing mayor with a proclamation during the festival’s opening ceremony.
“What you see around you is because of his work. This park was a dream of the previous mayor, and Chris took that dream and made it a reality,” he said. “This park, that MaryLou Center wouldn’t have happened without his drive and his vision and the people of Truesdale owe him a debt and definitely owe him their gratitude. He has been a fantastic mayor.”
Cannon also announced that the covered concession area would be named after him.
“As a tribute for all of Mayor Watson’s hard work, we are dedicating this area, this family area, to Chris Watson’s family, the Watson concession and seating area,” Cannon told the crowd.
A permanent sign will soon be erected in the area.
Watson said the recognition was “overwhelming.”
“It’s the reason why, no matter where I live, Truesdale is still gonna be my home,” he said.
Watson will officially step down from the position after the June 28 board of aldermen meeting.
