Truesdale budget includes $368,000 for parks, streets

Truesdale’s Board of Aldermen in June approved a $1.3 million spending plan for the next year, a quarter of which will be devoted to street improvements and projects at Bruer Park.

Aldermen voted 4-0 to approve the city’s annual budget June 17. It includes $175,000 for street repairs and $193,000 for projects at Bruer Park that are partly funded by state and federal grants.

The main street projects over the next year will be continued improvements on Smith Street in the area of its intersection with Laura Street, as well as work on Pinckney Street that includes repairing damage at the intersection with Highway M.

Truesdale is also planning street repairs in the industrial park off Highway M, along with general maintenance and smaller repairs around the city.

Not factored into the budget is the impact of a half-cent transportation sales tax approved by voters in June. City Administrator MaryLou Rainwater said the tax is expected to go into effect in early 2021. The tax will be dedicated solely to street-related improvements.

In Bruer Park, the city has two major projects that it plans to receive grant funds for this year.

The first is for general park improvements that will include playground equipment, walking trail, half-court basketball, repaving, benches and tables, according to the city budget. The project is being funded by a 50/50 matching grant administered by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, meaning half of the project cost will be funded by the grant.

Truesdale has over $118,000 budgeted for the park improvements this year, with $59,000 being supplied for the grant.

The city has another $75,000 budgeted for the early stages of a storm shelter and community center at Bruer Park. A grant from FEMA would cover 90 percent of that cost. The multi-million dollar project is currently making progress toward being bid on by contractors.

General expenses

Truesdale’s budget includes $315,000 for employee salaries, including administration, public works and police. Staff salaries were increased by 3 percent this year, according to a summary provided with the budget.

Expenses related to Truesdale’s water utility, and the rates it charges to residents, will increase by 3 percent this year. Costs for sewer service, which is provided by the city of Warrenton, will go up 4 percent.

Truesdale also has $40,000 set aside for future repairs to one of the city’s water wells, and $15,000 marked for the annual Railroad Days festival in October.
