Truesdale aldermen discuss modifying insurance coverage

Posted

The Truesdale Board of Aldermen spent some time during their May 13 meeting discussing the possibility of modifying the insurance coverage for the MaryLou Center and city hall.

City Manager Elsa Smith-Fernandez said the city recently had a loss control risk assessment where it was determined that the city is currently overpaying for its insurance on the MaryLou Center and underpaying for its insurance on city hall. Smith-Fernandez said the city currently covers the MaryLou Center at $2.2 million and city hall at $443,000. She said the risk assessment suggested reducing the amount to $1.2 million on the MaryLou Center and increasing the coverage for city hall to a minimum of $772,771, with a recommended amount of $965,000. Smith-Fernandez said, however, she didn’t feel comfortable going below about $1.6 million for the MaryLou Center.

The board made no formal decision at the May 13 meeting regarding the insurance change as they wanted some additional information from Smith-Fernandez before proceeding with a decision.

The board unanimously approved paying Ecoturf Surfacing of Kansas City $4,859.28 to reseal the playground surface at Bruer Park following warranty work to repair two gouges Mayor Jerry Cannon said exists at the playground. He said the city’s warranty for the playground ended April 15, but they were able to make contact with Ecoturf on April 13 to perform the necessary repairs. Due to the timing and weather constraints the work will not be completed until after Railroad Days on May 30, he said.

The board originally had the option of having city staff perform the resealing work at a cost of $2,850, but chose instead to have Ecoturf perform the work as they would be able to have a warranty. The board approved the project by a 4-0 vote.

The board also voted unanimously to pay an invoice in the amount of $51,276 to Don Brown Chevrolet to pay for the public works truck purchased to replace the truck totaled in an accident back in October.

The board also approved an invoice in the amount of $16,654 to A&W Communications for equipment for a vehicle owned by the Truesdale Police Department.

The aldermen also approved $3,000 to renew the contract with Flock Safety for the one camera the city currently uses. Police Chief Casey Doyle said the department is looking at possibly installing a second Flock camera in the city.

As part of the board approvals, the aldermen also approved an invoice in the amount of $10,925 to Cochran Engineering for water system modeling services.

During the meeting Cannon made the aldermen aware that MoDOT would be coming out to look at state highways in the city. He said that due to the construction on Interstate 70, local streets, specifically Highway M, are “taking a beating” as drivers are using it more frequently instead of using the detours on I-70 to get around the Highway 47 bridge replacement project.
