Record Managing Editor A Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper who was involved in a September shootout with a suspected bank robber has returned to the force. Zachary Wang was sworn in during a brief ceremony held last Thursday, May 1, at the Warren County Courthouse. Mike Wright, Warren County associate judge and former prosecutor, administered the oath. Wang had to be sworn in again since he left the highway patrol for a short time. He has been assigned to cover Warren County. The Peoria, Ill., native previously worked three years for the highway patrol. “I am ready to start and go forward,” Wang said. Wang declined to talk about the day of the bank robbery since it remains an active case. He was shot in the chest in the shootout, but fortunately survived and escaped with only minor injuries. His was wearing an armored vest. “I don’t remember a whole lot of it,” Wang said. The bank robbery suspect, Warren Gladders, remains in the Warren County Jail. He has been charged with five felonies, including first-degree assault on a law enforcement officer, armed criminal action, first-degree robbery and possession of an illegal firearm. Gladders also is facing federal charges for his role in three bank robberies. Police say Gladders entered First Bank in Dutzow on Sept. 20 and demanded money from the tellers. Following a short chase, Wang stopped Gladders’ vehicle on Highway F near New Melle in St. Charles County. Gladders fired at Wang, hitting him in the chest. The trooper returned fire, hitting Gladders in both legs.

Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper Zachary Wang, left, shakes the hand of Warren County Associate Judge Mike Wright after being sworn in last Thursday, May 1. Wang was the trooper who was shot by a bank robbery suspect in September, but survived thanks to the bullet being stopped by his armored vest.
