For Warrenton this past season, there was a three-headed attack when it came to the offensive side of the court. Seniors Brett Smith, Travis Toebben and Sam Toenges all received all-conference selections for their efforts this past season.
Brett Smith did more than just receive a spot on GAC North’s first team. He was also voted as the Player of the Year in the conference as well.
The senior point guard played in every game for the Warriors and had the ball in his hands quite often this season as the offense ran through him, whether it was his shot or facilitating to an open teammate.
Smith put in over 16 points a night by shooting 36 percent from the floor, while averaging almost four assists a contest and just over two steals per game. Smith had a season high of 26 points against Fulton in the Southern Boone Tournament and scored double digits in 22 out of 24 games.
The GAC North placed two Warriors on its second team — sharpshooter Travis Toebben and big man Sam Toenges.
Toebben was looked at as the team’s biggest three-point threat as he attempted well over half of his shots from long distance range. Missing only one game all season, Toebben chipped in over 13 points a night while hauling in four rebounds and grabbing two steals per contest.
“We gave it all each night,” Toebben said. “We played in a lot of games each night that could have gone our way but didn’t.”
Toenges was Warrenton’s tallest member of the team and he played like it. He appeared in every game for the Warriors while putting in over 13 points a night.
Toenges led the team in rebounding by grabbing nearly seven boards a night. He also led the team with a 42.5 percent shooting percentage as well.
“My team helped me get this because everyone knew their roles,” Toenges said. “We just had good team chemistry.”
Along with the All-Conference awards, Brett Smith and Sam Toenges both earned all-district honors.
The Warriors finished the season 10-15.
