Trash Changes on Deck for Wright City

Posted

Wright City residents will pay more for trash service beginning next month. In addition, trash will be collected only once a week rather than the twice-a-week service currently provided. Residents living on the north side of Interstate 70 will have their trash picked up on Tuesdays, while collection for those living south of the interstate will be on Fridays. All recycling collections will be on Wednesdays. The new monthly rates are as follow: single-family or smaller multifamily complexes, $11.68; and residential-senior citizens, $11.43. Those rates include a 33-cent per month processing charged by the city. As part of the new contract approved by aldermen in January with Wilson Waste, dumpster prices for apartment complexes have increased. The monthly charge for multifamily units is $56 (one yard), $75 (two yards), $135 (four yards), $175 (six yards) and $215 (eight yards). Those properties will continue to have their trash picked up twice a week. Senior citizen multifamily units will be charged $64 per month for a two-yard container. Currently, single-family residences are charged $10.13 for trash, while senior citizens pay $9.13. Trash is collected twice a week on Tuesdays and Fridays. In January, aldermen approved a new two-year contract with Wilson Waste, with an option to renew the contract for a third year. Monthly fees will increase in the second and third years. City officials said residents had preferred one weekly pickup. The cost increase is tied with the fact all residences will be charged for the recycling service. In the past, residents paid an additional fee if they recycled. The city mailed an informational sheet to residents this week notifying them of the change. Wilson Waste also delivered 64-gallon recycling toters to residences. Since the current trash routes will be revised, Keith Wilson, owner of Wilson Waste, is asking residents to have their trash out at the curb by 6 a.m. to make sure all items are picked up. “There may be some people who have trash picked up at 10 a.m. and now it may be 7 a.m.,” Wilson said. “The routes will be changing.” An additional toter can be supplied by Wilson Waste for a $3 fee. Residents can also have white goods picked up at anytime during the year by Wilson Waste for a $30 charge. The new trash collection schedule doesn’t affect commercial properties that continue to contract for service on their own. City officials said anyone with questions about trash service should contact city hall at 636-745-3101. “We realize there might be a few hiccups,” Alderman Jim Schuchmann said.
