Three Republican candidates are vying for the position of Warren County coroner at the Aug. 2 election.Because no other parties entered a candidate into the race, the winner of the Republican party will win the position. The three candidates are incumbent Glenn Craig, Tom Massman and Denise Mauzy. A questionnaire was sent out to each candidate and their responses are listed below. The candidates are presented in alphabetical order.Glenn CraigCraig, 49, is the incumbent coroner. He has held the position since January 2015 when he was appointed by Gov. Jay Nixon to fill a vacancy created when Roger Mauzy, the previous coroner, won a race for presiding commissioner. Craig, who was appointed as a Democrat, is running this time on the Republican ticket. The Wright City resident also is a firefighter and paramedic. Craig said that, for the first time, the county has a certified medicolegal death investigator serving as coroner. While in office, he has moved the storage of the coroner records from a private residence to a secure storage room in a county building. He said he has upgraded the reporting system from a paper system to a computer system that is secured and backed up.As coroner, he does not allow civilians on the scene to help process the scene. He also reviews and touches every case that is handled by the coroner’s office.Craig said he investigates and requires a full scene re-enactment on every infant death because he will “not settle for SIDS being the cause of death on an infant.”If elected, he said he will work to keep the deputy coroner up to date on training and data. He will have his deputy work on getting certified as a medicolegal death investigator.Additionally, Craig would like to offer training approved for continued education credits so law enforcement and emergency medical services can use them to renew their licenses. Tom MassmanMassman lives in Warrenton and is a retired law enforcement officer. He worked with the St. Louis County Police Department and was a detective in Broward County, Fla.Massman also served as a special deputy with Warren County. He is currently a medical field underwriter licensed in insurance. He pointed out that, as a law enforcement officer, he has been to many death scenes. In 2004 he was elected to the Warren County Ambulance District and re-elected for another term and served until 2010.If elected, Massman intends to work as a full-time coroner and not have another full-time job. He said he plans to coordinate with Mike Daniels, Warren County Disaster Planning Manager, for any large scale emergency situations.Massman would like to review all Warren County roadways for dangerous curves, high points that lack a clear line of site, proper placement of signs and other issues that could help prevent vehicle deaths.Massman said he would work with the county commission in a smooth and normal manner and continue education classes.Another thing Massman would like to do is recruit, hire and train additional deputy coroners as needed for a better response time. He said the county can’t have a three-hour response time, which has happened under Craig.Denise MauzyMauzy, 66, is a retired Warrenton resident. She has never served in a public office and stated she has no plans to make any significant policy changes if elected.Mauzy is the wife of Roger Mauzy, the former coroner.
