Three more enter races for county commission

Posted
Three more people have entered the fray in increasingly crowded races for two upcoming vacancies on the Warren County Commission.

By the time candidate filing closed on March 31, three people had registered to compete for the Northern District seat on the three-person commission, while five people are set to jostle for the Southern District seat.

County Clerk Denise Stotler said Tom Meyer of Marthasville registered for the Southern District race March 20. Jason Boles of Lake Sherwood entered on the last day of filing, March 31. Meanwhile, Doug Nordwald of Warrenton registered for the Northern District race on March 26.

The candidates are all registered as Republicans, Stotler said, meaning they will face off against each other during primary elections in August.

The other candidates who will appear on ballots for the Northern District are Jerry “Junior” Myers and Matt E. Flake, both of Warrenton.

Other candidates in the Southern District race are Luke F. Struckhoff of Marthasville, Tony Gagliano of Warrenton, and Dave Mikus of Wright City.

Incumbent commissioners Dan Hampson and Hubie Kluesner are not seeking re-election.

Five other elected officials are seeking re-election, and are running unopposed, Stotler said. They are Sheriff Kevin Harrison, Assessor Wendy Nordwald, Public Administrator Melissa Dempsey, Coroner Mark W. O’Neill and Surveyor Robert Lewis.

No date changes

Stotler said recent changes to the timing of municipal elections have not affected county-wide elections. Missouri’s municipal elections were pushed back by two months due to the COVID-19 outbreak, but Stotler said county and state-level primaries are still scheduled for the first Tuesday in August.

One slight challenge for county elections was how to get candidates registered after the county closed its administration building to the public earlier this month.

Stotler said staff from her office arranged to meet with candidates in the parking lot and have them fill out all the paperwork to file for office.

State elections

Candidate filing also closed for state-level elections on Tuesday.

According to the Missouri Secretary of State’s Office, Rep. Jeff Porter is unopposed for re-election to the Missouri House of Representatives for District 42. The district includes all of Montgomery County along with a large portion of Warren County.

New Melle Mayor Richard West is running to become the new representative for District 63, which includes parts of Warren and St. Charles counties. Another challenger joined that race on Tuesday, Dale Schaper of Wentzville.

All three House candidates are Republicans. No Democrats registered.

In the race for the 3rd U.S. Congressional District seat, incumbent Blaine Luetkemeyer will face off in August against four Republican challengers: Brandon Wilkinson, Adela Wisdom, Jeffrey Nowak, and Lynette Trares. Two Democrats will face off in the same primary, Megan Rezabek and Warrenton resident Dennis Oglesby.

The U.S. House seat will be decided in November, when the primary winners will appear on a ballot along with Libertarian Leonard Steinman II.
