Thomas, offense shine in Wright City win

The Wright City Lady Wildcats used a complete performance Tuesday afternoon to notch their first win of the season.
In a game that was moved from St. Clair to Wright City, Wright City (1-2) topped St. Clair 15-0 in four innings.
The Lady Wildcats jumped ahead early, scoring seven runs in the first two innings. They scored two runs in the first inning. Leadoff hitter Paige Rees reached base on a leadoff double. She scored with one out in the inning on Emma Staats’ sacrifice fly to center field. Sophia Wegrzyn singled and scored later in the inning on Emma Thomas’ RBI double.
The Lady Wildcats added five second inning runs. They were aided by home runs from Staats and Lydia Clubb. Clubb’s home run was an inside-the-park home run. Staats hit a traditional home run over the fence.
“After the fast pitching we saw this weekend, it was a little bit different change but you still have to adjust,” Wright City softball coach Fred Ross said. “That first inning, we hit a couple balls right at people. And then next inning we kind of leveled it down and elevated a couple.”
Thomas toed the rubber for Wright City and threw four shutout innings. She scattered two hits over the four scoreless innings. She struck out three Bulldog batters.
“Three of her four pitches were on tonight. She threw a lot of strikes which was good...She painted the zone. Made them hit and our defense gobbled the ball up and made plays,” Ross said.
The win followed a pair of close losses at Boonville over the weekend to kick off Wright City’s season. Wright City lost to Boonville 5-3 and Fayette 10-9. Boonville won the tournament.
Despite the pair of losses, Ross was happy with the team’s effort over the two games. Wright City came into the season with six new starters. They had a seventh new starter due to senior Abby Vossen’s injury.
“With new players and new things going on, I was very pleased,” Ross said.
Wright City is scheduled to face off against Elsberry High School Thursday. The game is scheduled to be played at 4:30 p.m. at Wright City High School. They will play at Lutheran St. Charles Friday and at North Callaway Tuesday.
