Updated 10/18/19 with information from Warren County Sheriff Kevin Harrison.A teenager walking along the North Outer Road between Warrenton and Wright City Wednesday evening was injured when she was struck by a Warren County Sheriff’s Department patrol vehicle.Shelby J. Siler, 17, Wright City, suffered moderate injuries and was taken to SSM Health St. Joseph Hospital in Lake St. Louis, according to a Missouri State Highway Patrol report. The highway patrol said Siler was walking eastward on the outer road near North Spoede Lane around 7:40 p.m., when she was struck by a 2016 Ford Taurus driven by Austin M. Bond, 21, Warrenton, which was also traveling eastbound. The highway patrol said the front right part of the Taurus struck Siler.Warren County Sheriff Kevin Harrison told The Record that the driver of the vehicle was an on-duty sheriff’s deputy driving a patrol vehicle. Harrison said Siler and one other person were walking after dark on the side of the road, which does not have a shoulder. The deputy attempted to swerve when he saw them, but still clipped Siler with the side of the vehicle, Harrison said.Harrison said the sheriff’s department is taking this incident very seriously, and that the highway patrol is handling the crash investigation. He added that this section of the North Outer Road has a significant amount of pedestrian traffic due to neighborhoods in the area. After speaking with a member of Siler’s family, Harrison said he was told the teen has a broken ankle and abrasions from the impact. The sheriff said although the incident is serious, he is grateful that Siler’s injuries were not any worse. This incident is a reminder for drivers and pedestrians to use extreme caution in areas that have a lot of foot traffic, especially where there aren’t shoulders or sidewalks, Harrison said. He added that pedestrians should wear reflective clothing when walking at night.Crash
